Homesick Restaurant

Artist Lu Lin organizes an event called ‘Homesick Restaurant’ on Saturday, June 11 in Kunstruimte H47. With this workshop it is her goal to use food to bring together international inhabitants in the Netherlands together. By doing this she’d like to combat the loneliness that affects this international group, that comes with living in a foreign environment. Lu Lin aims to create a feeling of home in the context of ‘ Homesick Restaurant’ to achieve this. In the workshop a combination of cooking and storytelling is employed.

Food is more than just ingredients. In a lot of different cultures, and particularly the Asian cultures, food is a reflection of a collective way of living, memories, authenticity and stories. Because of this food adds more than anything to this sense of ‘home’. If we eat together it means we share something of ourselves with each other, and establish connections with one another. Unfortunately this meaning of food is disappearing more and more in the modern social context, and that leads to loneliness. Especially among international inhabitants (the so-called ‘expats’) in the Netherlands, who experience homesickness because of this disconnection.
